12 Testers for 14 Days: What Google Requires and Why

What the 12-testers and 14-day closed testing requirements actually mean, and how to meet them without setbacks.

If you are applying for production access on a personal developer account, Google asks new developers to run a closed test first. The numbers 12 and 14 come up constantly — here is what they actually mean.

The 12-tester requirement

Google expects at least 12 testers to opt in and stay active during your closed test. These should be real people with real Google accounts — not test accounts you created yourself.

The 14-day requirement

The test needs to run continuously for a minimum of 14 days. The clock starts once testers have accepted and installed. Pausing or removing the track can reset the count.

Why the requirements exist

Google uses the test period to confirm your app is stable, has genuine users and is ready for a public audience. A test with real activity shows the app has been exercised in the real world.

What you should prepare

  • A complete, signed build — not a skeleton or placeholder app.
  • Clear instructions for your testers on what to try.
  • Ongoing communication so testers stay engaged for the full period.
